Friday 30th August 2019 saw the Northland Secondary Schools Ki o Rahi Regional Tournament take place at Lindvart Park in Kaikohe.

19 teams from around the Northland area gathered together to represent their schools at Ki o Rahi, students were there for competition but also to have fun, to improve themselves as well as to meet peers from other schools.

There were two Divisions for the day - Division 1 was for all schools aiming to qualify for Nationals and Division 2 was more for participation, learning, growth and whanaungatanga.

It’s a real tribute to all the mahi being done in the area from coaches, managers, referees and players that the North has such a strong Ki o Rahi competition!

A big shout out to the Sport Northland crew and the many kaitautoko (volunteers) for all their time, effort and passion for Ki o Rahi and physical activity, you guys are doing an amazing job!

Marcia Aperahama, He Oranga Poutama kaiwhakahaere with Sport Northland gave us some insight into what was important for them on the day.  “We were encouraging the kōrero of the rohe and pepeha to be heard in games as an aim of the day. This became part of the role of the kaitakawaenga where they felt comfortable to do so.

Tewhatewha were also encouraged to lead the tatū and umpire their own games. They also opened up the negotiations first with pepeha and whakawhanaunga on the ara. All teams experienced this format at least once during the day. Umpires became more of a mediator, or kaitakawaenga, to help the flow of the tatū, uphold the wairua of the field and help tewhatewha and teams who couldn’t come to a decision.”
